Network Management Environment

While the user might view the client machine and its software as the system, the server is the critical component. It manages the network, provides access to data residing on its storage devices, generates data requests for data residing on other nodes and transmits those requests to their appropriate nodes. The client machine makes a request and the server does all the coordination necessary to fulfill that request.

Standards-setting organizations and vendors are developing frameworks to manage the interconnected information technologies. Currently, these products are primarily in the specifications stage, although components may currently be available.

The Open Software Foundation is focusing on building distributed computing and management software and developing a new role as manager of middleware technologies developed by outside companies. Middleware sits between the operating system and the applications. One of its open software technology is Distributed Management Environment.

Open software foundation's distributed management environment provides a framework for a vendor-neutral, object-oriented and cost-effective environment that can be used by hardware and software vendors to develop products. The distributed management environment provides the following characteristic as,

• An object-oriented application interface for administration and management of multi-vendor objects, such as network devices, systems, applications, files and databases.

• A standard application programming interface to manage a wide range of networked systems via either open source interconnection's common management information protocol or simple network management protocol.

• A common Graphical User Interface across different network management applications and services.

This management environment is design to cover network management as well as systems management. By integrating systems and networks, internet standards can handle the management of their interconnect information technologies as a single process, not multiple processes. Applications written to distributed management environment specifications will run on any management environment-compliant network management systems.

Some of the distributed management environment pieces are available from contributing vendors. The integration of the pieces into the distributed management environment platform is not slated until at least the second quarter. Distributed management-complaint software will not be available until 1994. As parts of the distributed management specification are complete, open software foundation is releasing snapshot versions to its members.

Object management group's object management architecture combines distributed processing with object-oriented computing. It provides a standard method for creating, preserving, locating and communicating objects, which can be anything from entire applications to pieces of applications such as graphical screens or complex number-crunching algorithms. Using this mechanism, cooperative-processing applications can be supported within a heterogeneous, distributed and network environment.
