MBA Review - Computer Information Systems Emphasis
If you like computers and business, an MBA with a computer information systems emphasis may be the perfect area of study for you. Information Systems (IS) professionals enjoy an aggressive, fast-paced work environment and are typically generously compensated. Here is a quick review of what to expect from an IS MBA.
Corporations and other organizations today must have efficient information systems. These systems manage everything from customer interaction & sales pipelines to employee benefits and internal processes. IS professionals are critical to helping these systems perform properly. Employers typically look for professionals who are specialists in specific software or systems and who understand business concepts. A bachelor's degree is usually required and a master's degree is typically preferred. An MBA with a CIS emphasis may include business concepts such as accounting, economics, human resources, marketing, and more. In addition, the program should include computer programming concepts, networking, database, data mining, and other systems related areas. One advantage of combining an MBA with an information systems emphasis is that both business concepts and computer concepts are taught together so the student can see practical application in the business world.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2006 IS Managers held around 264,000 jobs. About 1 in 4 of those jobs were service-related. Growth in this field is faster than average - about 16% growth between 2006-2016. A great advantage of a IS career is that there will always be a need for IS professionals. Organizations will continue to install and maintain sophisticated systems in order to keep up with competition. Earnings vary, but the median salary in 2006 was around 105K-109K. Executives in 2007 have reported salaries up to 157K.
