In order to pursue a career in information systems management, you will require at least Bachelor's degree in a computer related field if you are looking at management positions, although most employers prefer that their employees have a Master's degree in Business Administration, in which they took technology subjects as their major. Some majors are like computer science, information science, or information systems management.

To complete a Bachelor's degree in a computer related field, you would need about 4 years. This should include courses like computer science, computer programming, computer engineering, mathematics, and statistics. The information systems management programs usually comes as a part of business schools, which would have typical business subjects like finance, marketing, accounting, and management, as well as more technological-based business subjects like systems design, networking, database management, and systems security. To further pursue an MBA would require 2 years. The course design is similar, except that it is more specialized and in-depth. Although these degrees would help you attain a managerial position in this field, some people are also able to work in this field even with an associate or trade school degree. However, this would require much experience to get there. These people would usually take up a Bachelor's or Master's degree to advance their career.

There are some skills that would do you well in this field. For one, you will need to be able to demonstrate your understanding of specific software that will be required to do the job. You can gain this skill through experience, or you can show your professional certification for the program if you have one. Certification basically indicates that you have an area of expertise, which would actually increase an applicant's chances of attaining a job. Managers in this field should also have a thorough understanding of business practices, and be able to incorporate it with information technology, for example, through business decisions. Thus, experiences in business management, consulting or sales can be a plus point. Lastly, good leadership and communication skills are also needed in order for these managers to work and monitor employee performance, as well as explain technical terms to non technology-savvy people.
