Keyword Search Strategy Made Simple
Keyword Search Strategy Made Simple
Before you can being to create content for your website, blog or articles, you need to identify the best keywords for your niche. The keyword search strategy you use during your keyword research will have a huge impact on whether your campaign succeeds or fails.
The quality of your chosen keywords or phrases is so important, they have a huge impact on how quickly you get ranked in the search engines as well as how highly you rank. They also impact your traffic volume. If you make the mistake of choosing a very popular keyword, that doesn't have many popular variations yet it has a huge amount of competition, you could be setting yourself up for failure.
You can compete with high competition keywords, but it takes much more work and a lot longer before you begin to see results.
For maximum success, your keyword search strategy should include:
1) Brainstorming the kinds of words or short phrases people will use to find content in your niche. This is a step you can't afford to skip as all of your content will be built around the keywords you decide upon. If your niche is dance attire, you don't want to pick words based on dance training. You need to keep your main keywords focused on your niche.
2) Think about the best words or phrases you would choose when searching for information on your niche. Chances are you have already done this when doing the initial research on what item or services you wanted to promote. Put yourself in the shoes of your targeted audience, how would they be able to find your content on the web?
3) If you know people who are interested in the content you plan to have on your site, ask them what words would they use when searching for something specific within your niche. You will find yourself gathering a ton of possible phrases for you to check out. Make a spreadsheet and put the content you gather on it.
4) Find a good keyword suggestion tool or program. There are literally hundreds of keyword tool available to you via the internet. Some are free some are subscription and others are a one-time fee. Most people use the Google Keyword Suggestion Tool because it is free and constantly updated.
Once you have gathered a solid list of possible phrases to base your content on, you will want to put them into the keyword tool you have decided on and let the program do a search that will provide you with a list of popular keywords used in relation to your input. This will give you a great idea of how often the words are plugged into the search engine as well as the competition level.
Once you have created your report, export it to your desktop so that you can further investigate your results.
5) If you have already created your website or blog and you aren't getting the traffic you desire, you could also use a feature in the Google Keyword Tool that allows you put in an actual web address to see the best keywords to use for that particular site.
If you don't come up with any good phrases after putting your web address in the software, you will probably need to revamp the content on your site to target new keywords altogether.
6) When deciding on the best words to use, I highly suggest going with those that have a competition level of.30 or less, and have from 1000-3600 monthly global searches. Once you have gone through this process there is one more step before making your final decision.
7) You now need to take your list and see how many sites are trying to rank for the same keywords. This may be the most important step in your keyword research strategy. You do this by going to Google and putting your keywords in quotation marks like this: "my search phrase" then hit enter.
Right below the search box you will see a number that tells you just how many sites are competing for that exact same keyword or phrase. I suggested trying to nail down a phrase that has 5000 or less websites competing for it.
Now this can be tough! The internet is just over saturated with so many sites and so much content in just about every niche. It is very possible that you could have a list of 100 possible keywords but find that you only walk away with 2 that don't have too much competition.
This is why it is so important to really narrow down your niche at the very beginning. I would never join the "weight loss" niche, but I might consider the "flat stomach" niche instead.
8) Alright! You have finally decided on the best keywords for your site and now it is time to actually use them. Where you place them is crucial because if the search engines can't find them then your site won't get ranked. Basically, poor placement of your main keywords could cause the search engines to not see your site so be careful here.
You want to place your main keyword in the meta-tags, title tags, description tags and on every single page of your site while maintaining the integrity of your content.
Density or how often you should use your phrases per page. The search engine spiders that crawl your webpage collecting information are very intelligently designed. They can easily recognize spam on your website or blog. If you stuff or overuse your main words or phrases the spiders will notice and this will cause your site to rank lower in the search engines.
Remember you can use more than one keyword on each page of your site, but you want to make sure to use your main words for SEO purposes. For example, if your main phrase is "flat stomach" you can also sprinkle words like "slim waist" "firm abs" etc throughout your content. Remember you aren't trying to rank for the related words they are just to keep your content relevant without you overusing your main keyword.
At this point you are well on your way to internet marketing success!
Please keep in mind that finding the best keywords or phrases for your site can be very time-consuming. It may take you 2-5 days to finally nail down a good group of words.
That is alright, do it anyway. Following a solid keyword search strategy is imperative to your online success. If you don't take the time to do this in a mindful manner you may find yourself working your heart out months down the road with no success at all.
