Improve Your Critical Thinking Skills - Quality Information

For many years the critical thinking skills of people in this country have been non-existent or extremely lacking. With the recent ramping up of government control and power, an increasing number of people are showing a strong interest in local and national politics. To be a good advocate for any cause, you must have a strong knowledge of many subjects and excellent critical thinking skills. Improving your critical thinking skills starts with having accurate and reliable information.

Having bad information when analyzing a topic, will at best make you look foolish and at its worst be deadly. In this day and age the majority of information comes (at least in part) from the Internet. One important way to ensure the value of your information is to know the credibility of the website or writer, hopefully from personal experience, although references from other trusted sources will also work. Be aware of the slant of the writer or site, an angle is not necessarily a bad thing, as long as you are aware of the viewpoint. Remember, it's not just people or specific groups that will have an agenda, so will government and educational entities. Find out to what extent the materials you obtain were provided by an amateur or professional. The line between amateur and professional has become increasingly blurred, but it should still be taken into account when evaluating the quality of your information.

Compare the materials that you deem to be reliable. This is where your critical thinking comes to the forefront, putting your own experience and intelligence to the task of sifting through the information and coming to a sensible conclusion. Lastly, an often overlooked aspect of judging the quality of your evidence is possessing an expansive base of knowledge yourself. Continuously read and learn on a variety of subjects, this can be a very important anchor point for analyzing data in a critical way.
