Gartner (previously known as the META Group) has defined "big data" as a three-dimensional concept that has an increasing volume, variety and velocity. This definition has been very much used in the industry. In 2012, users are already dealing with exabytes of data, a seriously huge amount people can only imagine in the past. Market - IBM, Microsoft, HP, Software AG and other information management specialists have been spending millions on software firms that specialize in analytics and data management due to big data.
Technology - Because big data require sophisticated and exquisite technologies to process huge quantities of data within reasonable amounts of time, there is a need to develop suitable technologies. One of these is the de-identification software that strips information from the source of data while maintaining data utility at the same time.
Health Sector - De-identification is required to protect information of patients. Also, libraries have already adopted some methods used in the healthcare industry to retain their readers' privacy.
