Presidential Historical Sites

From George Washington, our first president, to our current chief executive Barack Obama, you can find historic sites dedicated to these leaders scattered across America. At present, there are thirteen established Presidential Libraries and Museums. Twelve are open to the public and they are located everywhere from California to Massachusetts. One might assume each museum is devoted exclusively to a single president, but there is a much broader scope. On a recent visit to one of these centers, you may have seen a display of First Lady dresses through the years, or a spotlight on presidential pets. No matter the focus, there is something for all ages and interests.

Where Are The Presidential Libraries And Museums?

Beginning with our 31st president, Herbert Hoover, each successive president has a combination library and museum. Travelers going across the country will find the twelve museums in ten different states. Two are in Texas, commemorating the presidencies of Lyndon Johnson and George H.W. Bush. California has two as well, honoring Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

Singular museums for eight other presidents can be found in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Massachusetts, New York, Arkansas, Michigan, and Georgia. In addition, there are numerous historic sites dedicated to earlier presidents, which usually combine their family home along with a library and exhibit area.

Each of the presidents are spotlighted in depth at their own library, but the emphasis is just as much on overall American history as one specific era. Traveling exhibits rotate around the country, so repeat visits are encouraged and of continual interest.

Many of the exhibits are targeted for families, with particular emphasis on getting to know the president as a person rather than just a political figure. Strengths and flaws are fairly portrayed and the public really gains a true understanding of the office of president.
